Loosefills – Rubber Mulch, Play Grade Barks & Woodchips, Play Sands and CushionFall

Loosefill materials e.g. rubber mulch, playsand, bark, woodchip, Cushionfall etc must be laid to a minimum depth recommended by the standards and require containment, either by means of an excavated pit or above ground retaining edging. Although loose materials are less expensive than stable materials, they will become dispersed with use and require raking back into position. They are also natural materials (excluding Rubber Mulch) that will eventually decompose and require replacement. However, the need to do this will depend upon usage of the play area. A membrane should be laid between the ground and the loose material to arrest decay and promote drainage. Loose fill is an economical alternative to rubber tiles and wet pour rubber surfacing, although we do not recommend it for some types of moving play equipment unless SafaMulch wearpads are being installed.

All Playsafe loose fill safety surfaces are manufactured with children’s wellbeing in mind.

Some examples of Loosefill solutions are provided below:

Loosefill Rubber Mulch
Using rubber shred manufactured from rubber tyres for play area surfacing or landscaping provides some impressive benefits.

These Include:

• Low maintenance
• Weed, mould or fungus control
• Large shreds are less likely to disperse
• Does not attract pets
• Retains surface moisture tension only
• Reduced settlement with no compaction or rotting
• Cost effective long-term life cost
• Manufactured from rubber taken from tyres containing no metals hence less risk of contaminants.
• Variety of colours available as dipicted
• Comfortable underfoot
• Natural aesthetics providing an authentic natural look

Loosefill Rubber Mulch conforms to BSEN1177 safety standards. E.g. a Loosefill Rubber Mulch depth of 50mm (onto topsoil, 150mm onto concrete) will provide maximum critical fall height of 3000mm

Please Note: Playsafe Playgrounds strongly recommends the use of SafaMulch wearpads beneath areas of high wear e.g. swings, roundabouts, entrances and exits of multiplay units.

Playsand
(Non Toxic, Non staining and Low abrasive characteristics)
Play Sand is double washed to give the appearance of a tropical style sand, it is ideal for play areas as well as other sporting activites.
The impact parameters are suitable to the equipment manufacturers recommendations and installation where the depth of impact correspond to a critical fall height.
Playsand conforms with BS EN 1177. E.g. a Playsand depth of 300mm will provide maximum critical fall height of 3000mm.

Play Barks, Softwood and Hardwood Chips
There are various options of Playsafe bark and woodchips which are totally natural products produced from pine or hardwoods. Sourced and obtained from within the British Isles these are all free from methyl bromide and pest contamination.
• Particle sizes are 10-40mm.
• Free from fines and minimal whitewood content.
• All barks and woodchips conform to BSEN1177 safety standards. E.g. a bark, woodchip depth of 300mm will provide maximum critical fall height of 3000mm.

CushionFall & Colours
Manufactured from seasoned, recycled soft wood fibres that knit together to form a stable, long-lasting surface, giving excellent absorption against impact.

Cushionfall is high quality, virtually maintenance free and conforms to BSEN1177 regulations.

E.g. a CushionFall depth of 300mm will provide maximum critical fall height of 3000mm.
