PlaySafe has successfully completed a major playground safety surfacing refurbishment at Wisborough Green Recreation Ground, delivering a durable new Safamulch™ surface ahead of the busy summer holiday season.
Working on behalf of Wisborough Green Parish Council, the project involved replacing deteriorated safety surfacing that had been affected by ground movement caused by the site’s heavy clay soil. The completed refurbishment has revitalised the popular community playground, creating a safer, more attractive play environment for visitors of all ages.

Addressing Long-Term Ground Movement
The Parish Council invited tenders for essential repairs after sections of the existing wetpour safety surfacing had reached the end of their serviceable life. Ongoing movement within the heavy clay subsoil had caused the surface to deteriorate, creating the need for a more resilient solution.
Having previously experienced excellent results with PlaySafe’s Safamulch™ bonded rubber mulch elsewhere within the playground, the Council selected the same proven system for this latest phase of improvements.
A Complete Refurbishment
Before installation could begin, the existing safety surfacing was carefully removed and the underlying sub-base repaired where necessary. The programme also included several complementary improvement works to ensure the playground remained safe and ready for years of continued use.
The project included:
- Preparation and reinstatement of the existing sub-base where required.
- Replacement support legs to selected items of play equipment.
- Installation of new fence posts along the southern boundary.
- Installation of 293m² of Safamulch™ bonded rubber safety surfacing, providing a durable, impact-absorbing surface that blends naturally with the surrounding landscape.
Excellent site access enabled PlaySafe’s in-house installation team to complete the works efficiently, with the entire programme finished in just nine days and well ahead of the summer holidays.
Designed for Performance
Following a detailed site survey, PlaySafe developed an installation plan that addressed both the surfacing defects and the wider repair requirements. The result is a seamless integration between the new safety surface and the existing playground, improving both appearance and long-term performance.
Safamulch™ was selected for its durability, natural appearance and ability to better accommodate the movement associated with heavy clay ground conditions, helping to reduce future maintenance requirements.
